The Art Inspiration

Untitled design

Christian Dior once said, “Without Foundation, there can be no fashion.” This quote came to mind when I was scrolling through Tumblr and found the fabulous 2015 Marchesa Notte dress featured in the image above. The bust on the dress and the tulle of the skirt just screamed Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to me. I then began to go down a rabbit hole of dresses that grabbed inspiration from famous works of art.

Paolo Sebastian aw 2015 Couture and  Little Dancer of Fourteen by Edgar Degas

The dress could have pulled inspiration from many a tutu, but I choose the Little Dancer because of its Iconic status in the art world.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Gustav Klimt and Givenchy Couture 2010.

The famous painting got its own film this year, but I found it inspiring for the dress because of its jagged gold patterns that are mirrored in the dress.

Kenzo S/S 2014 and The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai.

The top shirt of the Kenzo shirt has a repetitive wave pattern reminiscent of the wave pattern in the Hokusai print, making the inspiration clear.
